about Sapphire Padparadscha
Prized throughout the ages padparadscha sapphires are as beautiful and exotic as their name. Padparadscha is the only variety of sapphire other than ruby that is given its own name, rather than being referred to as a sapphire of a particular color. The name padparadscha derives from a Sinalese word meaning "lotus blossum". Padparadscha can vary in hue and tone but are a delicate pinkish orange to orangish pink in color without any brown color modifier. The color of padparadscha sappire is caused by titanium with tiny amounts of iron in their chemical composition. The finest padparadscha sapphire come from Sri Lanka once called Ceylon and also Vietnam and parts of East Africa. Like all varieties corundum padparadscha is an excellent jewelry stone, second only to diamond in hardness. Sapphire is designated as Septembers birthstone.
