about Amethyst

Amethyst is a member of the quartz family of gemstones. Crystalline quartz in shades of purple, lilac, or mauve is called amethyst. The finest colored amethyst is a dark bluish purple in daylight to a reddish purple in incandescent lighting. Amethyst that exhibit these colors are called Siberian Amethyst in the trade. Amethyst has been traditionally worn to guard against drunkenness and to instill a sober and serious mind. The name amethyst means "not drunken" (Greek). A few centuries ago, deep-colored amethyst was highly prized and was very expensive. The price of amethyst gemstones fell greatly with the discovery of the large deposits found in Brazil and Uruguay at the end of the nineteenth century. Today is found in many locations around the world.
The finest amethyst come from Brazil and Uruguay. Large quantities also from the United States, Madagascar, The Soviet Union, India, Australia, South Africa, and many other locations.
Amethyst is a fairly durable gemstone with a hardness of 7 and is a good choice for all types of jewelry.
Amethyst is the designated birthstone for February.
